PRESS RELEASE
Elk Grove Village, IL - June 20, 2006 - Ascender Corporation, specialists in fonts optimized for on-screen legibility and multilingual support, announced today the appointment of Jeff Finger, PhD, as their Chief Research Scientist. Ascender is a leading provider of advanced font products targeted at hardware & software developers and the appointment of Dr. Finger will enhance the company’s portfolio of fonts and font rendering software.
“Jeff’s talents will be extremely valuable to our efforts to solve the challenges associated with developing compact Asian font solutions for mobile devices and embedded systems” said Ira Mirochnick, president of Ascender. “Jeff will be responsible for leading our R&D efforts and will work closely with the rest of our team to build font technology solutions for the various markets we serve.”
“I’m proud to be part of such a talented and respected team, and look forward to helping Ascender develop innovative font solutions,” said Jeff Finger. “There are many challenges left to solve for device manufacturers, including reducing the file size of Asian fonts and improving the ability of font engines to render small, complex shapes on screens ranging from mobile phones and PDAs to digital TVs.”
Ascender has positioned itself as the “go-to” company for any software or hardware developer that has a font need. It offers one of the most significant font collections with fonts tuned for on-screen display and multilingual fonts with Unicode-support. Ascender offers fonts licensed from Microsoft, Bigelow & Holmes, and their own original typeface designs. The Ascender team works with developers to customize the fonts into a wide variety of font formats, including bitmap, TrueType, OpenType, ClearType hinted, and compact Asian. In addition, Ascender is developing font software to address the specific needs of implementing fonts into mobile devices, TVs, and consumer electronics products.
Jeff Finger earned a B.A. in Physics and Chemical Physics at Rice University, an M.S. in Computer Science at University of California at San Diego, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University. He has been developing computer software for over 20 years, and began developing font technology software in 1987. Jeff managed the font technology group at Imagen, where he developed font hinting software and first worked with Ascender’s Steve Matteson and Tom Rickner. Jeff then worked at Adobe System's Advanced Technology Group, where he was involved in the earliest Acrobat Forms systems and the PostScript Level 2's memory management system. Jeff later developed a variable printing technology that was acquired by WebWare Corporation.
