Description
In the 1920s, Italian poet and fable writer Francesco Pastonchi was commissioned to create a new edition of the Italian Classics. Pastonchi found no existing typefaces satisfactory, and decided to design a new face for the project. Pastonchi enlisted the aid of Professor Eduardo Cotti at Torino's Royal School of Typography and the duo commenced work. They studied a vast array of typographic examples, from early printed works and manuscripts to inscribed lettering, and presented their drawings to Monotype for manufacture. The design was refined and perfected, and produced in 1927. Named for its vigilant shepherd, Pastonchi is an invigorating Venetian face with a colorful and romantic appearance. With its full complement of expert sets, swashes, and titling caps, Pastonchi is prepared for the demands of fine text typography. Its delicious forms enable it to fulfill the desires of display typographers yearning for history and innovation.
