Description
In the 1990s, gifted Dutch type designer Frank E. Blokland crafted Haarlemmer, Jan van Krimpen's unpublished text type from 1938. Van Krimpen's design was originally intended for use in setting a new edition of the Bible with Monotype metal typesetting technology. Monotype's machines had severe limitations that did not allow Van Krimpen to realize his true vision. When the Netherlands was invaded during World War II, the Bible project was shelved, and Haarlemmer along with it. Through careful study and reinterpretation of original drawings (and freed from the constraints of the metal format), Blokland was able to revive Van Krimpen's concept as that designer had dreamed. Haarlemmer is an exquisitely rendered text type with timeless grace and a quiet temperament, and is praised as one of the finest book faces available today.
