Description
Dante is a stunning text face conceived by German-born printer and typographer Giovanni (Hans) Mardersteig after World War II. Mardersteig, who founded Italy's renowned Officina Bodoni press, was skilled in working with beautiful book types such as Monotype Bembo and Centaur. He took that expertise to heart in designing his own book face, Dante, mating his fine roman with a glorious italic. Dante was originally hand-cut by French punchcutter Charles Malin, and reworked in 1957 for mechanical composition by Monotype. Ron Carpenter brought Dante into the realm of digital typography in 1993. Unencumbered by the limitations of metal, Carpenter's rendition of Dante is a richly textured design, stately and readable in books and other text settings, and sumptuous in display typography.
