FONT ENGINESAscender offers two font engines for developers to select from to display type on screen: The Microsoft Font Rasterizer has earned a reputation as the high quality leader, and offers support for patented TrueType® hinting not available in open source alternatives. The FreeType Font Engine is a popular open source system that is a good choice for less demanding applications. These font engines are part of the Ascender Font System -- a comprehensive set of components to layout and render multilingual type on devices ranging from mobile phones to digital TVs. For consumer electronics devices that require CJK fonts with the smallest memory footprint, Ascender Compact Asian Fonts is available. The Ascender Font System was developed to use standard font rendering calls to make it easier for developers to plug in different font engines. MICROSOFT FONT RASTERIZERAscender now offers developers the Microsoft font rasterizer as a high quality rendering module in the Ascender Font System Since its introduction as part of Windows® 3.1, the Microsoft font rasterizer has been used by millions of users on both desktop and mobile platforms, with numerous updates to improve its security and stability. It has become the standard by which other rendering technologies are judged. The Microsoft font rasterizer uses patented TrueType rendering algorithms. This allows hinted TrueType fonts to be rendered with greater accuracy, improving the on-screen rendering of fonts. The opportunity to render hinted fonts has consistently been sought after by consumer electronics, mobile devices, industrial displays and many other products with which feature a screen to display text. For developers that require a fast, small, high quality font engine that comes with TrueType patent indemnification, the Microsoft font rasterizer is recommended. Because it is optimized for CE devices, the Microsoft font rasterizer is the perfect choice for companies who want the highest quality screen display without IP licensing issues. Ascender is proud to offer the Microsoft font rasterizer as part of the Ascender Font System to hardware and software developers. Please contact us for more information. FREETYPE FONT ENGINE
