Fonts for HD DVD (High Definition DVD)

HD DVD brings high quality typography to the big screen with new features that leverage scalable fonts in the OpenType format. Ascender is proud to offer HD DVD authors a wide range of font styles and languages to choose from.

High Definition DVD (HD DVD) is a new format adopted by the DVD Forum featuring high definition picture quality and enhanced interactivity. Developers can create advanced content applications using a combination of XML and ECMAScript technologies. Fonts are resource files, also known as assets, and offer DVD authors the ability to create text on screen with breathtaking clarity to leverage the high resolution of HD DVD.

The Microsoft HD DVD Interactivity Jumpstart Package contains software and utilities to simulate, test and debug HD DVD applications. Ascender has licensed a set of OpenType (.TTF) fonts to Microsoft which are included in this package for developers to use and distribute on HD DVD discs.

The eight fonts were all designed by Ascender’s Type Director, Steve Matteson, for on-screen viewing and to showcase the advanced typographic features of OpenType.

The font license with the Microsoft HD DVD Interactivity Jumpstart Package allows authors to use the fonts ‘as is’ with a title, and not to make any modifications to the fonts. Please contact Ascender Corporation if you desire any enhancements to the fonts, such as additional character sets, language support or other font styles.

The fonts in the HD DVD Jumpstart Package include:

• Kootenay™ regular (a sans serif design)
• Lindsey™ regular (a handwriting style design)
• Miramonte™ regular and bold (a sans serif design)
• Pescadero™ regular and bold (a serif design for text)
• Pericles™ light and regular (a sans serif inscriptional style design)

Kootenay™ is a new sans serif design named for region in the Southwestern Canadian Rockies bounded by the 7-9,000 foot Selkirk and Purcell Mountain Ranges. The Ktunaxa people have lived in this valley for thousands of years and their petroglyphs can be seen on several cliffs from Kootenay Lake. The design features curvaceous diagonal stems which combine with tapered terminals to produce a rich texture and an approachable appearance. The open counters and tall x-height make this design very suitable for interface designs while the typographic details are attractive for use at large sizes.

Lindsey™ is a script font based on the designer's niece's handwriting. The spunky-looking, informal letterforms could have been taken from a teenager's homework or birthday list - they're legible but have a youthful attitude. Lindsey is designed with contextual, OpenType enabled, alternative letters which enhance the look of real handwritten text. The design is useful for any situation where a casual, handwritten look is desired.

Lindsey's OpenType features include alternative vowels (2 additional of each a,e,i,o,u and y), ligatures (bb, cc, dd, ee, ff, gg, ll, mm, nn, oo, pp, rr, ss and tt), proportional figures and tabular figures. Click here to view a type specimen.

Miramonte™ is a friendly sans serif design suitable for user-interface design, corporate branding and publishing. The name means 'behold the mountains' in Spanish, suggesting the rustic, unrefined type design. Miramonte includes an alternative lowercase a, for those who have a stylistic preference, and an extensive character set for publishing Central and Eastern European languages.

Pericles™ is based on a type designed by Robert Foster for American Type Founders in 1934. This new version includes an extended set of OpenType enabled alternative letters. Use Pericles to create eye-popping effects in headlines, titles, banners, and greeting cards.

Pericle's OpenType features include alternative inscriptional forms (E,O and R), alternative narrow forms (C,G and S), and alternative ligature forms (TH and HE). Pericles Pro is a two font family: Light and Regular. Click here to view a type specimen.

Pescadero™ is named for the valley in California's rugged central coast. Early Spanish settlers called the area Pescadero (fishing place) as they observed it was a favorite fishing spot for the local natives. Pescadero is delicate and detailed for attractive documents but robust enough for serious reports and titles. The design is based heavily on calligraphic inscriptional lettering.
